The unit crate gives Stark commanders a new troop to add to their ranks. As well as other units, they are experts in hand-to-hand combat, being one of the few units in battle that gains an attack die while taking casualties. So your enemies certainly don't want to be hit, as the unit's fragmentation ability means the defensive guards are hard to get through. When you add Champion Umber, you are increasing your combat effectiveness.
