as we said previously, the game followed a path and several playtests were made to understand how it works. But, there came a time when we realized that Midgard should be more. We realized that all those test games served, fundamentally, to better understand the dynamics of allocation and distribution of cards and, mainly, how each of the game elements would behave within a mechanics of assembling troops and managing cards in hand. And, based on that understanding, we decided to turn the game around.

But before that, the concept of Battle was born, that is, the possibility for players to attack players. Midgard is not a co-op game. Each of the players represents a Jarl in search of Renown. The most renowned wins the game! So it was important for players to be able to battle each other. After all, one way to earn Renown is to show that your strengths are superior to your opponent's in combat.

The Battle mechanic has undergone several modifications and has been extensively studied. We wanted players to be able to battle each other, but that it wasn't something that was overrated in the game (there are lots of other interaction mechanics between players). In the end, the Battle was a very fun “something else” that can be decisive for victory, but it is not the crucial element of a game. We will talk about the Battle again in a next Report.

Some Challenge cards

Midgard's biggest change and improvement came with the introduction of Challenges. As the name implies, these are Challenges that can be won by each Jarl. And by defeating them, the Jarl accumulates Renown points. The harder the Challenge, the more Renown the Challenge is worth. Each Challenge is associated with one or more mystical worlds in the Vikings universe. Hel, for example, is a challenge from Niflheim and Muspellsheim. This means that players must be in one of these two worlds to be able to face her. In addition, each challenge has its own requirements and a difficulty, which the Jarl must beat with his Troops to defeat it. It's the Challenges, too, that control the game time, as some make the Nordic calendar rotate… In other words, winning Challenges is the great motto of Midgard. And to beat them, players need to know how to rally their Troops, use them wisely, and travel to the right worlds around Yggdrasil.

How does this play out in the game? We'll talk about it in the next Report… Stay tuned!
